Nature vs nurture: a dip into epigenetics

We have all heard the theory of nature vs nurture.

Let me do a quick review for you

The debate centers on the relative contributions of genetic inheritance (a.k.a nature) and environmental factors (a.k.a. nurture) to human development.

Where nature is genetic and hereditary factors and nurture is environmental variables such as childhood experiences, how we were raised, social relationships, surrounding culture etc.

Today, the majority of experts believe that both nature and nurture influence behavior and development.

An example of this, is if twins (genetically identical) were separated at birth and bought up in different environments. They would not be as similar as twins who were bought up together because of the “nurture” component of this equation.

Epigenetics

This is because of a really cool human factor called epigenetics.

Very simply, epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes express themselves (very simply, which ones switch on and which switch off).

If we take this nature vs nurture scenario a step further, you have identical twins again, in the same home environment, and again there are differences. Same DNA, same environment…. But because they are two different people, two different souls, if you will, they PERCEIVE things differently. And so, the difference is subtle but it still exists.

Let’s take this another step further, we all have a certain DNA which we inherit from our parents. Up to this point in our lives, our environment and lifestyle has dictated which genes express themselves. And we all know that through lifestyle changes, we can make some changes which impact our health and well-being, in a positive way.

But what about our thoughts? If we keep thinking, believing and acting on the same thoughts, we will still be restricted with the actual impact we can make on our lives, physically or otherwise.

What I am trying to say, is that we need to flip our nurture switch. We need to change more than just our eating habits, we need to change our thought patterns, our limiting beliefs, our perceptions because when we start to change these, this is where the shit gets real.

This is where we start to make crazy, almost unbelievable changes in our lives.

Let’s start to nurture ourselves

Do you want to change your health? Your life? Your abundance? You need to nurture that. You need to nurture those thoughts, make them sacred as you would a precious gift or a small child.

This is re-parenting.

Getting out of those old thought patterns you have literally inherited.

You are more powerful than you know.

Your thoughts are more powerful than you know.

And the only way you are going to find out how powerful you are is to start choosing differently.

And do it again, and again, and again.

You can do this.

You can literally change your whole life through making your thoughts (and therefore your actions) sacred.

Nurture yourself.

No-one else can do it for you.
